Some of the world’s most ancient civilisations stretch across this vast swathe of land, from the Middle East to the Pacific. So many people, such disparate cultures, so varied in scenery, but each full of fascination: and few of them well-trodden by tourists.

Best-known perhaps is Japan, for its manicured gardens and teeming cities, traditional costume and custom alongside cutting-edge technology, worship of both nature and business. So close, but so different, China is powering into the future, cities like Beijing and Shanghai as busy with fancy new cars as with rickshaws — but even here, old ways hold firm and glass skyscrapers are surrounded by curlicued temples and cobbled mazes of lanes teeming with people and bicycles. And the countryside is as picturesque as ever.

Along the Silk Road, traditional life continues on Mongolia’s harsh landscapes: felt gers, camels, nomadic people and customary hospitality all ensure unforgettable memories. In Tibet, yaks and streamlined trains are the extremes of an experience that includes astonishing palaces, mountains strung with prayer flags and colourful festivals; while Iran offers elegant mosques, ancient ruins and a welcome cup of chai.
