After spending three weeks cycling around France I was certainly ready for some beach time. We chose Tioman Island as it’s easy to get to from Singapore. Unlike a lot of Asia the best time to travel to Tioman Island is during the New Zealand winter. And, I would certainly recommend booking one of the 14 bungalows offered at our traditionally rustic boutique resort.

Tioman Island - Malaysia - July 2010

After spending three weeks cycling around France I was certainly ready for some beach time. We chose Tioman Island in Malaysia as it’s easy to get to from Singapore. The accommodation we found described itself as a traditional rustic boutique resort. Personally, I had no idea what this meant so we decided it could be perfect. All I can say is that it was simply brilliant and ideal for 6 days of doing nothing. Doing nothing comes hard to me. I usually carry a list of tasks that need to be completed. I now know how the other half lives and actually, chilling out, reading books and getting a daily massage for my sore legs has a lot of merit.

Our resort found the perfect mix. It wasn’t Hi-de-Hi and still managed to retain a Malaysian feel. And the staff really made you feel as though they cared. Our bungalow was literally over the water facing the setting sun. At night you could hear the monkeys on the roof, which just added to the experience and early each morning a Sea Eagle would do it’s rounds in front of us. Even though we were supposed to be chilling I managed to get out for a couple of dives.

Although not as good as Mexico it was certainly enjoyable and reasonably cheap. Unlike a lot of Asia the best time to travel to Tioman Island is during the New Zealand winter. And, I would certainly recommend booking one of the 14 bungalows offered at our traditionally rustic boutique resort.
